Scary priest
REFLECTION:
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
Once again I tried my hand at an acrylic portrait. While I didn't master anything, I think this piece is an improvement from my previous portraits as I got better with details, shadows, and value. This was also my first time attempting a textured background and I liked the way it turned out. I struggled with the hair and the blending of the background into the subject. I still wish to go back and fix both the forehead and the eyes. I preferred when they were empty.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I drew inspiration from the priests in Dubliners by James Joyce and the bishop in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. I derived meaning from these characters, as they were often symbols of corrupt authority and the corruption of the church. I also used a reference photo of Clint East Wood.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
No major changes were made from my original sketch. I did make the decision to make a textured background in order to make the piece more interesting. I also had trouble deciding on how the eyes should look, whether or not they should be blank or have a pupil. I will go back and make them blank.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
Overall, I'm happy with how this turned out but I will make adjustments to the forehead and eyes.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This ties into my theme of religion in literature in a fairly obvious way.
